Reviewing the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph

As has been the case for some time, Patek Philippe modernly supplies the Aquanaut with chronograph movements. This sporty complication fits perfectly with the company’s increasingly youthful, dynamic collections. But how does it perform in real life?

Our test watch, the Aquanaut Chronograph, comes with a striking orange “tropical” strap made of modern rubber compound that is resistant to abrasion, salt water and UV rays, and features a new double-folding clasp. With four independent latches and two side buttons, its patented design provides high reliability and easy operation. It has two spring bars attached to the end of the strap, so the strap has to be trimmed to fit the wearer’s individual wrist size—a strong move with no room for error. On different occasions, Patek Philippe also provided an additional black strap for the Aquanaut chronograph.

For added stability on the wrist, the strap ends on the case are secured not only by traditional spring bars, but also by two pins that lead from the strap ends to the body of the case. But why change the strap? We find the orange strap accentuating the colored accents of the chronograph functions on the dial; the slender chronograph hands protruding from the center of the dial; the minutes handing over to the subdial at 6 o’clock; minute track. This takes the same shape as the rounded octagon of the bezel. On the other hand, the design of the strap surface blends perfectly with the embossed reliefs on the main Aquanaut dial referenced to the Earth coordinate system.
